New www.fornis.net shares information on African forests

Forestry Research Network for Sub-Saharan Africa (FORNESSA) Information Service (FORNIS) organizes and presents forest-related scientific information from the area. By supporting and strengthening information exchange and thus African forestry research, FORNESSA aims to contribute to the conservation, sustainable management, and utilization of forest resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. FORNIS was implemented by Metla in collaboration with the US Forest Service.

How are carbon sinks and emissions of forests monitored?

Forests serve as natural carbon sinks, but Forest land and Wetlands can also be sources of emissions. As a part of the national greenhouse gas inventory, Metla estimates and reports sinks and emissions of the land use, land-use change and forestry sector of Finland according to the requirements of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the supplementary Kyoto protocol.
